Controls Engineer

Assist in the development of vision and programming standards and source code reviews for automated equipment. Provide guidance to employee end users on new equipment builds, analyze production equipment performance and develop plans to increase yield and productivity from under-performing manufacturing cells.

To be successful the candidate must be self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, time/project management skills, a positive attitude, be able to keep timely consistent and accurate records of work and understand the technology that is used within the manufacturing process. In our business, it is critical the candidate can demonstrate prior success working within cross functional process teams.

Candidate’s primary responsibilities include the following:

Lead developer responsible for all control systems that run HSC’s automated manufacturing systems, which include: Robotic Welding, Laser Cutting, Metal Forming, and Material Handling Technologies

Maintain, update, and improve current systems; develop new systems

Ability to compose professional documentation (Write protocols, work instructions, etc.)

Ability to manage time and projects effectively while setting and meeting aggressive schedules

Ability to communicate well to other members of the development team

Develop and build electrical and control system design solutions using best engineering principles and practices.

Produce and interpret electrical and pneumatic layout schematics

Programming of Logic Controllers and functional sequencing and timing of electro-mechanical and pneumatic devices

Work with vendors on automation designs to meet equipment specifications, to determine feasibility, project scope, costs, and timelines

Define equipment and spare parts requirements from external suppliers to ensure operational continuity of critical automated equipment.

Direct the installation, documentation and training for new equipment

Manage assigned project capital spending and timelines.

Maintain accurate records and files according to quality standard

Ensure all relevant safety objectives and legal requirements are observed for all work completed

Responsible for project success as part of a project team

Provide technical support to Maintenance and Manufacturing in order to resolve operational problems

Support existing PLC and robot-based equipment to maintain factory throughput.

Required Skills:

Solid understanding of computer programming and software development

Previous experience with industrial robot programming and communication.

Ability to troubleshoot equipment problems and perform complex system tests

Understanding of instrumentation and the automatic control of dynamic processes.

Ability to troubleshoot control system issues using logical methods and thought processes.

Proficiency with MS Office, Allen Bradley RS Logix 5000, AutoCAD Electrical

Strong fundamental knowledge of control and electrical system design and its application in automated industrial designs including specification of power, sensor, inspection, and communications systems.

Ability to interpret and understand the National Electric Code and applying the Code to equipment power supply and controls.

Broad knowledge of AC/DC power distribution.

Strong understanding of OSHA safety requirements as applicable to Electrical Power Distribution, Automation and Controls systems.

Ability to efficiently plan and organize work tasks to meet department objectives.

Excellent interpersonal skills and a professional demeanor.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Strong mechanical aptitude.

Must be self-motivated with a reputation for showing initiative.

Experience with metal forming, welding and assembly processes.

Knowledge of Inventor / CAD mechanical design software.

Additional OSHA knowledge in areas other than that defined above.

Education and Experience:

BS in Automation, Mechanical, Electrical, or Industrial Engineering (or similar related degree)

Several  years of professional experience in a precision engineering and/or manufacturing company with related job experience
